Strategy and Planning Team Overview

The Strategy and Planning team at Ropes & Gray plays an essential role in directly supporting the firm’s leadership on a broad range of strategic and change management initiatives essential to Ropes & Gray’s practices, offices, and staff functions. The team is comprised of approximately 10 individuals who collaborate on projects and hail from a variety of backgrounds that include management consulting, finance, and law. The team leverages its depth and breadth of problem solving, market research, business analysis, and quantitative analysis skills to help the firm’s leaders address strategic challenges and capture new growth opportunities. In doing so, team members are afforded exciting professional development opportunities by working on a wide range of strategic projects, which may include, for example, developing a geography-based strategy for one of Ropes & Gray’s existing eleven offices or a potentially new office, assisting a practice by analyzing its performance along a set of complex metrics, or working with practice leaders to identify new differentiated service offerings that address evolving client needs.

Job Description

The Strategy and Planning Analyst will be involved in project-based cross-functional work focused on a variety of strategic and operational initiatives, mainly in the human resources area, that are a priority for the firm. The primary role of the analyst will be quantitative data gathering and Excel-based analysis, while carefully organizing and managing multiple tasks. The analyst will also provide support for various workforce-related processes and projects that support the firm’s strategic direction. Projects may include attorney workforce planning, people analytics, attrition dynamics and attorney compensation.

Role specifics:

Data gathering:

  • Compile, scrub and synthesize data from internal systems using tools such as Business Objects
  • Track and document sources and methodologies meticulously

Data analysis and modeling:

  • Assist with the design, build, testing and maintenance of Excel-based models to explore historical trends, build forecasts and model scenarios
  • Analyze business information and data in a structured way to find patterns and relationships

Task organization:

  • Work with manager to coordinate project tasks, manage communication with team members, monitor progress to timelines and drive work to completion
  • Ensure highest level of organization, communication and follow-through on all projects

Result synthesis:

  • Work with manager to translate analytical results into hypotheses and actionable recommendations
  • Develop effective management presentation materials based on findings, including professional and flawless display of information

General:

  • Utilize problem-solving skills both independently and in a team environment
  • Demonstrate solid judgment about priorities and timing
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned

Requirements: Education, Experience, Skills, and Capabilities

We are looking for a unique individual with aptitude for analytics, meticulous attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and strong communication skills.

  • 4-year college level degree in Business, Finance, or related field
  • Aggregate minimum of one year of experience that demonstrates ability in data analysis and modeling
  • Strong aptitude for analytical work and strength in problem solving and logical thinking
  • Work in a self-directed manner to produce accurate, flawless, well-documented work products with strict attention to detail and complete follow-up and follow-through
  • Multi-task and effectively prioritize under time sensitive and often demanding schedules and where multiple projects are pursued concurrently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as strict attention to confidentiality
  • Work effectively across organizational boundaries
  • Work effectively in a small team environment. Must be team-oriented and able to share information, goals, opportunities, successes, and failures with the appropriate parties
  • Interact confidently and effectively with all levels of personnel, including senior management, attorneys, and support staff
  • Skilled in utilizing technology effectively
  • Willing to work beyond traditional business hours when necessary
  • Work effectively in a culturally and educationally diverse environment

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office environment. Incumbent is expected to work the hours necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
