IFC’s Private Equity (PE) Funds team is seeking a “Funds Specialist” – an experienced fund management professional to actively advise and guide the emerging fund managers within the SME Ventures Program. The SME Ventures Program helps to launch and invest in funds run by emerging fund managers which provide risk capital to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The Program combines investment in funds with advisory services to fund managers as well as technical assistance to SMEs in the funds’ portfolios. The program is focused on fragile and conflict-affected countries , as well as other frontier markets (mainly International Development Agency (IDA) countries ). The selected candidate will design and implement manager capacity-building advisory projects aimed at enhancing the skills and capabilities of the identified SME Ventures’ fund managers, as well as advisory projects to aid selected SMEs in the funds’ portfolios.

The vacancy will be based either in Washington, DC or Nairobi, Keyna.

Note: If the selected candidate is a current Bank Group staff member with a Regular or Open-Ended appointment, s/he will retain his/her Regular or Open-Ended appointment. All others will be offered a 3 year term appointment.

Under the oversight of IFC’s Head of Private Equity Funds and/or the Head of the SME Ventures Program, the candidate will have the following responsibilities:

    • For each selected fund manager, diagnosing the manager’s existing capacity levels across the various aspects of fund management, including strategy, organizational structure, business development, client acquisition, investment due diligence, portfolio management, exit planning, and back-office operations.
    • Creating and executing an action plan to address the manager’s capacity-building needs, either through direct mentoring or enlisting other service providers.
    • For selected SME investee companies, diagnosing advisory needs and executing effective advisory support at the investee company level, alongside the fund manager.
    • Where external service providers or consultants are determined to be necessary for manager capacity-building (e.g. for financial management systems) and/or SME advisory work, overseeing the selection and supervision of these consultants to ensure delivery of their assigned scope of work.
    • In coordination with the SME Ventures investment team, providing due diligence input on prospective fund managers, including identifying skill gaps to be targeted through the advisory services.
    • Ensuring appropriate estimation and utilization of budgeted resources for advisory projects and assisting the SME Ventures team in obtaining relevant information from the field operations to facilitate reporting to existing and prospective donors to the Program.
    • MBA or equivalent qualification.
    • At least 10 years’ experience in finance/investment.
    • Demonstrated experience in the private equity investment and/or fund management business, including experience with strategy, business development, client acquisition, investment due diligence, portfolio management, exit planning, fund and deal structuring, and back-office operations.
    • Strategic business acumen, deal making skills, an investment track record, and strong operational hands-on skills are highly desirable.
    • Experience working in emerging markets and a willingness to focus on more difficult markets and identify solutions to local challenges. Experience with frontier markets and fragile and conflict affected countries targeted by the SME Ventures Program is a plus.
    • Experience investing in SMEs is a plus.
    • Established, up-to-date knowledge of international leading practices and standards related to private equity operational risk management (including environment and social governance standards, business intelligence and data analytics) is required, along with the ability to disseminate this knowledge effectively within IFC and to IFC-supported fund managers.
    • Ability to communicate ideas effectively, and credibly represent IFC with clients and stakeholders.
    • A strategic thinker with an ability to adapt to changing needs at the fund/fund manager levels.
    • Strong organizational skills with an ability to work under time pressure, respond to ad-hoc shifts in client priorities, unstructured situations and unexpected events while maintaining order and delivery.
    • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills essential. Other languages a plus (French, Arabic).
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively and work across time zones.
