Lyft is looking for a bright, energetic, and self-motivated employment attorney with at least 6 years of employment counseling and litigation experience. You will assist with a wide variety of labor and employment matters that are core to the company’s business and growth. The successful candidate will leverage their prior law firm and in-house experience to effectively partner with Lyft’s People Team on managing employee relations matters, working with outside counsel on employee relations issues (including agency charges, pre-litigation, and litigation), as well as sometimes leading internal employee relations investigations. The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial and comfortable working in an ambiguous, quickly-changing, and sometimes chaotic environment, with a high workload.


  • Primary responsibility will be partnering closely with our People Team (HR & Recruiting) to provide legal advice on a broad range of employment issues, such as wage and hour, internal employment investigations, recruiting and hiring, employee management, and HR best practices
  • Proactively review current employment policies and employee relations policies to ensure legal compliance and consistency with corporate best practices
  • Proactively approach all aspects of internal employment pre-litigation and litigation, including pre-litigation & agency charges (DLSE, EEOC, DOL, OSHA, etc.), discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, and trial strategies
  • Collaborate closely with fellow Legal Team members to develop and carryout employment litigation strategy with an eye toward impact on Lyft’s culture and broader business objectives
  • Provide assistance and support to Lyft’s Legal Team members, and be able to work with and provide sound legal advice cross-functionally to other teams, such as: Finance, Product, and Government Relations
  • Take on other responsibilities as needed, including legal counseling around Lyft’s relationship with its independent contractor drivers


  • 6+ years practicing law at a leading law firm or in-house, with significant employment counseling experience
  • J.D. from a top-tier law school
  • Member of the California bar
  • Preference is given to candidates with prior in-house experience and/or experience advising technology clients as outside counsel
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities, judgment, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive attitude to the workplace
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, rapidly-evolving workplace
  • Ability to think quickly on your feet, convey grace under pressure, and simultaneously manage complex workloads, multiple client demands, and shifting priorities
  • Be a resourceful self-starter and have a passion for results
