Primary Responsibilities:

  • (OI) and Optum Technology, Inc. (OTI)
  • Collaborating with colleagues across the Optum and UnitedHealth Group legal departments
  • Proactively identifying, resolving, and counseling internal clients on regulatory and related legal matters as well as disputes impacting the OI and OTI businesses
  • Participating in and leading resolution of various disputes, including corresponding and negotiating with opposing counsel
  • Assisting in the review, preparation and negotiation of complex commercial agreements and related documents associated with OI and OTI products and services
  • Participating in and leading negotiations and consultative discussions with key customers and vendors, including their legal counsel
  • Developing best practices, including policies and procedures, for addressing emerging legal and business risks
  • Supporting OI and OTI in the development and delivery of new products and services
  • Assisting in counseling business groups on strategic business initiatives
  • Assisting in the management of outside counsel
  • Providing leadership to and is accountable for the performance and direction through multiple layers of management and senior level professional staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Bar admission in the state of Minnesota
  • 5+ years law firm and/or in-house legal counsel experience
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively and independently resolve disputes and advise the business on pre-litigation matters
  • Ability to analyze and interpret health plan documents and complex contracts and apply various laws thereto
  • Ability to identify issues and offer proactive, timely advice and follow through to resolution
  • Ability to present risks in a balanced manner as an objective advisor to business and other lawyers
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates and company contacts
  • Proven track record demonstrating the ability to independently make decisions regarding complex legal and corporate issues
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to operate in a matrix environment
  • Must be located in Minnesota – relocation not provided

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of federal health care, ERISA, Medicare, Medicaid, privacy and related laws, as well as various state laws, including those governing insurance
